Regardless of the season, homeowners are always looking for ways to cut down on their energy costs. A result of this, there are a few myths floating around penny pinching circles that can actually do more harm than good.
Our HVAC systems are working hard to keep us comfortable, so we should do our best to take care of them. Proper care and maintenance can ensure a long life for these important systems AND keep your bills low.
Myths Disguised As Money Saving Tricks
1. Closing Vents
There’s an old idea that closing the vents in empty or unused rooms will boost energy efficiency. False! Closing the vents can actually increase air flow and pressure within the ducts which will lead to leaks at the vent seams.
Sure, there’s logic behind this myth, but the reality is that closing off vents in unoccupied rooms will make your blower fan overwork and can result in damaged ductwork.
2. Cranking Thermostat
Another common practice is to put the thermostat down as low as possible in order to cool off your home quickly. A thermostat’s function is to send info to your system alerting it to turn on and off based on a set temperature. Therefore turning it all the way down will not cool your home any faster.
3. Annual Filter Change
This is a hassle to remember. But unfortunately it’s common for homeowners to believe they should only change their air filters once a year.
In order to maintain good air quality as well as an efficient HVAC system you should ideally change your filter every 2-3 months. More often if you have a full home and/or pets.
The only way around frequent air filter changes is if you install an Air Purifier.
4. Regular Maintenance Is a Scam
Your HVAC system is very similar to a car in the sense that it is an important and complex mechanical machine—they both need regular maintenance to ensure they’re working at full capacity.co
An annual tune up will not only guarantee top performance it can also save you from expensive repairs or replacement in the future.
How many of these myths have you heard? Or believed?
Don’t be too hard on yourself as each of these four falsehoods have been passed around for years. The best thing you can do is to stop following these trends and schedule your annual inspection.
When it comes to important (and expensive) systems in your home, it’s best not to take a DIY or “hack” approach to issues that arise. You should always get a trained professional to handle this.
